Maria Maria – Wine at Fazenda Capetinga
Fazenda Capetinga has teamed up with Tres Pontas native Milton Nascimento (or “Bituca” as he goes by in Tres Pontas) to launch Maria Maria wine. Eduardo Jr. and Milton were neighbors in Belo Horizonte in the early 1980’s when Milton moved from Rio back to Minas for a few years and the two Tres Pontas natives have been great friends ever since. Named after the song (youtube video below), the brand will launch this June/July.
While “Brazil” is far more likely to conjure up images of caipirinhas and tropical drinks than wine, Brazil does have a small wine tradition, though confined mostly to the southern regions, in particular the Vale dos Vinhedos. Recently wine production has expanded to other regions including the Sul de Minas and Mogiana coffee regions. When discussing mycotoxins with Dr. Sara Chalfoun at UFLA she even mentioned that the Northeast region of Brazil was producing wine that was of decent quality and with lower levels of mycotoxins than most European wines.
The Syrah varietal has thrived in this region, but Eduardo has also planted Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc and among others. The grapes are taken to Caldas, Minas Gerais where Epamig (Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuaria de Minas Gerais) runs a production center. Eduardo has invited us to the inauguration in a few months, so hopefully some blog posts with Milton to follow 🙂 Below are some photos of the wine and the grape vines.
The song that inspired the wine brand: Maria, Maria from Milton Nascimento.
