We at Casa Brasil are fortunate to have forged a great relationship with some incredible growers over the past few years. The Associação dos Produtores do Alto da Serra, also known as APAS, is a fair trade group of 40+ coffee growing families outside of São Gonçalo do Sapucaí (in the Mantiqueira de Minas growing region) that are producing some incredible coffees.
This past fall, Joel and Zachary Sanger were able to go to the Mantiqueira de Minas region to visit APAS and pick out the best of the best of these coffee farmer’s crops for direct trade to Casa Brasil here in Austin. Over the next several months, Casa Brasil will be offering three of these special coffees as featured micro-lots: Sítio Esperança, Sítio Bela Vista and the Família Borges blend.
The Sítio Esperança is a naturally processed lot of three different cultivars: Mundo Novo, Red Catuaí and Yellow Catuaí. It is the best of the best from Sítio Esperanca, and, not surprisingly, won the APAS competition as best natural. Grower Alessandro Alves Hervaz is a special guy, not only helping to lead APAS forward but producing incredible coffees as well as honey and propolis on his farm (we will be posting more on Alessandro as we feature his farm in the next few weeks). I scored the arrival sample an 86 out of 100 on our cupping table. It has notes of lemon curd and strawberries, with a bright acidity and a clean and crisp finish.
The Sítio Bela Vista is a pulped natural Red Catuaí variety grown by Jarbas Cleito Lopes. This coffee scored an 87.5 out of 100 on our cupping table. A very complex coffee with notes of ripe berries and stone fruit, with a sweet aroma and fragrance and a creamy mouthfeel. This coffee reminded me of a high quality naturally processed yirgacheffe that I had tried a few years ago.
The Família Borges blend is similar to our Zanetti Brothers Blend in that we go outside the confines of a single farm, and instead bring to you the work of a family “across farm lines,” if you will. The Borges have long been known in this region for their quality coffee. The Familia Borges blend is a full bodies and chocolaty blend with hints of red fruit and spice.
These APAS coffees are exquisite and are available only for a limited time. We hope you enjoy!
