Fazenda Recanto

Historic farm produces historic coffee

Fazenda Recanto has a long and incredible history in coffee production, and many of the farmís original structures are still standing and still in use. Olimpio Souza Magalhaes(1850-1920) first planted coffee at Recanto in 1874. Since 1985, his great-grandaughter Maria Selma and her husband Afranio have managed the farm,  maintaining the well-deserved reputation of consistently producing great coffees.  In 2010 they produced many award-winning coffees, including two Rainforest Alliance finalists as well as their first fully-washed coffee.

Of the farm's 1023 acres, over 1/3 is dedicated to conservation, with 148 acres dedicated to a permanent reserve.

Maria Selma and Afranio live on the farm, and one of their hobbies is to record the wildlife found on the farm. Below in the gallery are some of the photos they have taken of the wildlife on their farm.

One of the keys to the consistent quality of Fazenda Recanto is their insistence on dividing the coffee into smaller homogenous lots, and the large size of their drying patio, which permits the coffee to quickly and adequately dry, inhibiting the onset of fungus and bateria that can trigger off-flavors.
